Senior Network Engineer / Network Protocol Developer
Senior Network Engineer / Network Protocol Developer at Excdev, remote. Focus: VPN/overlay protocol development, packet-level incident diagnostics, tunneling, encryption, routing, performance optimization, and network diagnostic tooling.
Development, evolution, and optimization of private virtual network protocols. Diagnosis of complex incidents in VPN/overlay networks at packet, route, and system stack level. Design of tunneling, encryption, routing, and node discovery mechanisms. Analysis of protocol performance and elimination of bottlenecks. Development of tools for network diagnostics, tracing, monitoring, and debugging. Participation in architectural decisions on security, scalability, and fault tolerance of the network platform. Collaboration with backend, infrastructure, SRE, and security teams.
Experience as a network engineer, network protocol developer, or system developer for 5+ years. Deep understanding of TCP/IP network model, routing, switching, and tunneling. Practical experience diagnosing complex network issues: packet loss, performance degradation, MTU/MSS, NAT traversal, etc. Confident knowledge and experience with protocols: TCP, UDP, IP, ICMP, ARP, DNS, DHCP, BGP, OSPF, GRE, IPsec, WireGuard/OpenVPN-like solutions. Experience developing or improving network protocols, VPN solutions, and SD-WAN systems. Experience with low-level network development in C/C++ or Rust; Go knowledge is a plus. Experience with Linux networking stack: routing tables, iptables/nftables, and eBPF/XDP. Ability to analyze network traffic using Wireshark, tcpdump, and similar tools. Understanding of cryptographic principles applicable to VPN: key exchange, symmetric/asymmetric encryption. Ability to read RFCs and technical specifications. Experience developing VPN, SD-WAN, or mesh networking solutions. Knowledge of QUIC, TLS, DTLS, or Noise Protocol Framework. Experience with Kubernetes networking and CNI. Understanding of threat modeling and secure-by-design practices. Personal qualities: Systemic thinking and ability to understand complex network scenarios. Ability to drive diagnostics to a specific technical cause. Independence in making engineering decisions. Willingness to work with uncertainty and explore new technologies.
